Introduction

In Ayurveda, Prakruti is defined as the natural constitution of a human being. There are three types of constitution- Vata, Pitta and Kapha. There are seven types of Prakruti made up of a combination of three doshas. They are:

  • Mono-Type (Vatta, Pitta or Kapha dominant)
  • Dual Type (Vata-Pitta, Pitta-Kapha or Vata-Kapha)
  • Equal Type (Vata, Pitta and Kapha in equal measure)

A person with different Prakruti has different characteristic. For example, people with Vata constitution are creative, people with Pitta constitution are courageous and people with Kapha constitution are calm and considerate. They also differ in appearance, features, illness and diet.

Prakruti Types

  • Vatta dominant

    Vata dominant individual is active, agile and mobile. People with Vata body types are generally creative and are quick learners. They can be fickle also.

  • Pitta dominant

    Pitta body types are action-oriented. They are usually very ambitious, determined, and intelligent. They are also very aggressive and could get pushy at times.

  • Kapha dominant

    Kapha body types are very grounded and dependable. They are closely connected to their family, friends and are realistic. Kapha body types could get overly possessive.

  • Vata-Pitta

    They will exhibit both Air and Fire qualities.

  • Vata-Kapha

    They will exhibit both Air and Earth & Water qualities.

  • Pitta-Kapha

    They will exhibit both Fire and Earth & Water qualities.

  • Vata-Pitta-Kapha

    They are rarest of all body types, the three Doshas are in equal amounts. Tridoshic body types have the strongest immunity.

  • Vata-Pitta-Kapha

Do and Don’t

  • Vata: Consume dairy products, sweet and sour fruits and vegetables, nuts, oil and spices. Reduce intake of bitter and pungent food.
  • Pitta: Consume dairy products like ghee, rice, barley, leafy vegetables and cool foods
  • Kapha: Consume light fruits, honey, pungent spices, corn and most vegetables. Avoid dairy products, nuts and juicy vegetables.
  • Vata- Pitta: Consume Nourishing and freshly cooked vegetables, Dal, Soups, Fruits, Squashes and Natural Sweeteners.
  • Vata-Kapha: Consume nuts, light food, dairy products and cooked food.
  • Pitta-Kapha: Consume rice, leafy vegetables, oil and fruits.
  • Vata-Pita-Kapha: Consume nuts, raw vegetables, soups and nutritious food

Other Information

During pregnancy, the mother should follow a diet which is opposite to the dosha of the child so as to maintain equilibrium. Diet should be prescribed by a physician after properly determining the constitution of the child.

Physical appearance

  • Vata: Lean, tall, small eyes, dark hair, low stamina etc.
  • Pitta: Medium height, sharp eyes, soft skin, and hair.
  • Kapha: Broad frame, heavy, bright eyes and wavy hair.
